Arranged in five groups: I. Vocal scores (4). II. Orchestra parts (15). III. Vocal parts (16). IV. Promptbooks (13). V. Dialogue parts (19). The vocal scores are in German and French, published by Bote & Bock, Berlin (1860, pl. no. 4801--4807). The orchestra parts are manuscript. The vocal parts are manuscript, in four sets. One set is in English and three sets are in German, one of which contains superlinear handwritten English text and one which carries the stamp of A. Schlinter, Hamburg. Many of these parts carry the signatures of performers. The promptbooks include seven typescript books in English, several bearing performers' names; two English manuscript books; two German manuscript books, one of which bears the stamp of Ed. Uhlig; and two annotated printed librettos, in German, published by Bote & Bock (1860). They carry the title "Der Herr Gemahl von der Thür." The translation is by A. Bahn and J.C. Grünbaum. The dialogue parts include three sets of typescript English parts and two sets of German manuscript parts.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman .
